Plan ahead! Most military moves occur between April and September, as people try to move when school is out. A busy housing office, less rental trucks available, and busy roads, all make a more hectic DITY Move if you do not plan ahead. In the summer, add vacation traffic to those travel plans and you can see how easy it is to get frustrated with the whole moving process.
First, you have to make an appointment with the DITY or PPT Counselor or the transportation management office before a move, which is also clogged with TMO shipments during these busy times.
It is recommended to make those appointments immediately after receiving your new orders. They may be backed up and it may take more time for them to help you with your DITY or PPT Move.
The service will pay 95% of what it would have cost them to move your HHG themselves. Allowed weight,Your Rank, number of dependents and the distance of the move are all factors involved in how you are reimbursed.
Weight is estimated at 1000 lbs per room, not including a kitchen or bathroom. They calculate based on that, but do not pay you that amount in advance.
You use your government travel card or personal credit card for gas, tolls, weight fees, rental trucks, or moving services. However, if a person's entitlements come to $5,000, for example, and you spend $2,500 for your DITY Move expenses, you get back $2,500 -28% in taxes.
